Located some 37 miles from Denver, and 16 miles from Boulder, Longmont, Colorado is also only thirty minutes away from Rocky Mountain National Park. Money Magazine voted Longmont as #61 of the top 100 best places to live in the country both in 2006 and 2008. Low unemployment and crime rates coupled with good schools and affordable real estate are prime attractions to the area. Longmont is a town for outdoor enthusiasts, offering more than 1,500 acres of lush parks and recreation areas.

An area long known as a hunting ground by native American tribes, Longmont’s dry climate made continuous habitation difficult and although the northern plains were heavily traversed, they remained unoccupied for centuries. One of the first explorers of the area was an Army officer named Major Stephen H. Long for whom the town was named at its inception in 1871.

Longmont, Colorado began when a group of prominent Chicagoans sold memberships to a new town called “The Chicago-Colorado Colony.” The money was used to purchase 60,000 acres of land for a town site in northern Colorado and to build irrigation ditches to bring water from the rivers to the fields.

The Longmont Recreation Services Center has it all in terms of indoor recreation. It features a running track, weight room with free weights, cardio equipment and aerobics room, multi-court gymnasium, climbing wall, lap pool (6 lanes, 25 yards), leisure pool with water slides and steam and dry saunas and spa just to name a few activities.

One of the biggest tourist attractions to the area is the Longmont Museum, which was founded in 1936 and opened in the carriage house at Callahan House in 1940. It holds many artifacts that date back to Longmont’s early history.

This little town that has a population of almost 89,000 has a lot to offer its residents in the way of amenities and quality of life.
